2024 Medford Winter Lights Festival
The holidays are such a magical time of year for our family. We attend every event we can and the Winter Lights Festival that Medford Parks and Recreation plans is at the top of our list.
We have attended just about every year since our now eighteen year old Ilias was three years old, so it is a very special event for us. Both of our kids have been performers in the event with their preschool classes and Olivia as a toddler ballerina with Miss Sarah ‘s beginner ballet. Then in Ilias’ last three years of high school, he performed with South Medford High School’s marching band to welcome Santa.
As our kids have performed, a few years ago Gary was asked to play Buddy the Elf for Medford Parks and Rec, and it has become an annual tradition along with our friend JC dressing as The Grinch. We love being able to engage with our community as it has grown to the awesome event has become.
The day is full of events starting with the Candy Cane Hunt at 430pm. Much like an Easter egg hunt, candy canes are thrown all over the grass and kids are separated into age groups to grab as many as they can when it is announced.
After the hunt there are performances by local entertainers if weather permits and you can walk around to shop vendors and enjoy food from some of our local food trucks. Make sure to stop by the Medford Parks and Recreation tent, they always have something fun for everyone. Keep an eye out for Buddy the Elf and The Grinch for a free photo-op sponsored by Rogue Comic Con.
Around 6pm you will hear the marching band that announces Santa himself. It’s always so fun seeing kids get so excited. They take a little turn around the block where the band breaks off to stand in front of the stage and performs more holiday music. Santa then gets dropped off at the Lithia building on the corner of S. Bartlett and E. 5th St. Bring your cameras and cellphones to get your free photos with Santa.
When the band is finished playing, the countdown happens and the trees get lit up at the north end of Pear Blossom Park. You will then want to turn south to catch the grand finale fireworks held right over the parking garage in downtown Medford.
If you want to go it’s located at:
Pear Blossom Park - 204 N. Bartlett, Medford, Oregon 97501
There is plenty of parking in the parking garage right across the street.
