Humbird at The Talent Club

Saturday, April 5, 2025

8:00 pm

It feels good to be right. We crave the satisfaction, the ease. But what about when you’re not so sure? When you’re unsteady, angry, swayable, and doing your damned best anyway?

There’s something refreshingly humane about that uncertainty; about having the guts to try, even if you might be wrong. This is the central tenant of Humbird’s third full-length album, Right On, a radical ethos in this soap-box age, and an effort worth turning up the amps for, resulting in the project’s most electric, playful, mettled record yet.

Siri Undlin (the songwriter behind the moniker) and her collaborators tracked live and to tape over the course of two muggy weeks in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. For a collection of songs unafraid of ambiguity, it’s music that bares its teeth. Anger and dismay sizzle in response to current events. Heartbreak feels like sandpaper, while wildflowers bob and sway in an ever-expanding universe.

Produced by Shane Leonard and featuring regular contributors Pat Keen (bass, synth, percussion) and Pete Quirsfeld (drums and percussion), the majority of the songs showcase the locked-in rock trio, a progression from the contemplative folk musings of Undlin’s previous releases. Even so, Right On incorporates friendly winks to the more whimsical, soundscape-y improvisations that audiences have come to expect from a Humbird performance – electrified, gritty, Midwest Americana with a little magic fairy dust thrown in.

“Right On,” the title track and first song of the album, opens the record with a tone of resigned tenacity. ‘I’m not mad, but I should be / since true love proved unlucky / I cast the dye, I stained my hands / on wrongful judgments and half-baked plans.’ As the song moves through time and space, “being wrong” feels less and less like a failure, and instead transforms into guiding wisdom. The warm tremolo of the guitar maps along the grooves of the rhythm section, creating an atmosphere of inviting imperfection, a clever catalyst for the chorus’ simple melody to launch and land right in the tender part of your sternum.

Other notable tracks include “Child Of Violence,” complete with psych-rock phaser pedals, which explores the legacy and impact of white supremacy in middle America; “Cornfields and Roadkill” focuses in on land stolen for profit, and old-growth forests traded for mono-crops in a sonic landscape reminiscent of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. “Song For The Seeds” is a slow-burning synth number, imploring the listener to tear up their lawn. It wields a refrain that will germinate in your mind – a proper earworm.

Through observation and deft questioning, the lyrics land less like a political agenda and more like a hard conversation with a friend. All the while, you can hear the summertime pace where the recording took place, and the steady confidence of songs that have already traveled many miles on the road.

And those miles – they’re hard-earned. For Undlin, growing up steeped in church choirs and traditional Irish ensembles eventually led to conducting extensive folklore and musical research around the world as a Watson Fellow. That work inspired years of DIY touring around North America, including performing around the twin cities one backyard at a time during the pandemic. Undlin continues to expand and experiment as a writer and bandleader in a way that is fluid with each season, and oddly suited for this particular moment. Following the surprise success of the self-released debut album Pharmakon and the pensive reflections of 2021’s Still Life, Right On is the next iteration in her process of witnessing the world in all its complexity and responding with candid consideration.

For loyal fans and new listeners alike, Right On is a mischievously kind offering: a whole heap of songs that are unafraid to bask in the perfectly ordinary and also excruciating possibility that sometimes we’re right, often we’re wrong, but no matter what, music can meet us where we’re at and keep us company along the way.

Mr. Steely Dean and the Whatever at The Talent Club

Mr. Steely Dean and the Whatever at The Talent Club

Saturday, April 12, 2025

8:00 pm

Once upon a time, in the Rogue Valley of Oregon, Dean decided that he wanted to play with his favorite musicians, all busy music professionals who lead their own groups and support other artists locally and globally. He and Actual Wolf, along with the Grand Marquis, hatched a plan to make a certain kind of music with no rules about how or what to play. They devised a catch phrase, based on an old ad by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker who were looking for good players in New York City. “Must have chops. No hangups.”

Dean Angermeier, Eric Pollard (Actual Wolf), Jacob Rubanowitz (Yak Attack), Nick Kirby (Every Band Ever) and Tarik Ragab (Raze the Maze) are all global musicians who just happen to be lucky enough to live in the Rogue Valley together. Collectively they have played with just about EVERYBODY in the valley, including Jeff Pevar and Inger Nova with Zepdrix and Lovebite, The Rogue Suspects, DKSP, Hopfinger, Dead AF, Yak Attack, Rogue Underground, The Robbie Dacosta Septet, Jah Sun, Bishop Mayfield and Friends, The Frankie Hernandez Band, Modern Prometheus Jazz Company, Saucy, Shine On and on and on. If there is a group or performing musician in the Rogue Valley, there’s a better than aught chance that one or more of these guys have played with them at one time or another. They’ve played all over the world with global touring bands, but always come back to the Rogue Valley to play with their friends and live in the greatest place on God’s green Earth.

Rock, jazz, blues, jam, country, dead, free, and even hints of classical make their way into the music of Dean’s Funtime Party Band. Basically it is any kind of music you can play with an actual instrument. And these guys play some of the most epic grooves and notes heard anywhere in the ether. Combining songs and elements of Miles Davis, Grateful Dead, Steely Dan, Jaco, Charlie Parker, Paul Simon, Wayne Shorter, Phish, Keith Jarrett, Allman Brothers, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan, along with original music, The Funtime Players just love to play! For the growing number of fans of DFPB, there is great incentive to catch each and every show. You’re guaranteed to hear something you’ve never heard before. And you never know who will show up to sit in with these crazy cats.

In addition to playing whatever musical choices they like, the members of Dean’s Funtime Party Band get to play whatever INSTRUMENT they want to play. They set up multiple drum sets, keyboards, guitar and bass rigs so they can all jump on whatever they like. One of the amazing things about these guys is that every player can play every instrument. Dean might hop on the drums, Nick and Jacob might switch whatever instruments they happen to be playing at the time, Actual Wolf may grab a guitar, and Tarik might push Dean off the keys so he can rip a mind numbing key solo to rival his bass badassery.

So check your interwebs, your socials, and your network of fellow Funtimers to keep track of where this stellar group will be playing next, and for their upcoming original album “SERIOUS FUNTIME” to be released in 2024. Soon enough they’ll be coming to a city, state, or country near you, and you can share in the crazy musical adventures of Dean’s Funtime Party Band.

Maya De Vitry at The Talent Club

Saturday, March 22, 2025

8:00 pm

Originally from Lancaster, PA, Maya de Vitry is a Nashville-based artist whose music blurs the lines of country, folk, indie rock, and Americana. An admirer of the dedicated song craft of writers like John Prine, Gillian Welch, and Townes Van Zandt — and of the stirring vocals of artists like Bonnie Raitt and Nina Simone — Maya de Vitry’s music invites listeners into a space of openness and connection.

After a formative chapter with the roots-Americana trio The Stray Birds, she launched a solo career with her 2019 album Adaptations, earning praise from Rolling Stone Country, NPR Music, and No Depression. Since then, she has built a devoted following, drawn to both her recordings and her powerful live performances. Known for her magnetic voice and hard-won sense of purpose, Maya has toured in North America and Europe, supporting artists like The Wood Brothers, Aoife O’Donovan, John Craigie, and Mighty Poplar. Her songs have also appeared on albums by Molly Tuttle, Lindsay Lou, and Steve Poltz, and her skills as a multi-instrumentalist and harmony singer have contributed to many Nashville recordings.

Marty O'Reilly (solo) at The Talent Club

Marty O'Reilly (solo) at The Talent Club

Thursday, February 27, 2025

8:00 pm

Cathartic, genre-bending Folk

Explaining Marty O’Reilly’s music is like describing a dream. It feels familiar, but at the same time unchartered. His songs sound bluesy but not blues, folk but not folk, soulful but not soul. Marty’s voice is beautiful and unique, his lyrics stark yet lush over gritty electrified guitar, melding beautifully into genre-defying music within the vast definitions of Americana. One can hear an urgency and complexity in the songs, expressing something elemental and perhaps contradictory: love and anger, joy and pain, real and imagined.

The live performance is at the core of Marty’s projects. On stage, whether accompanied by a band, or alone, he enters a trance and the music is born again as something new every night. It’s what his followers call “magic”. He goes from raw gospel blues to cinematic epics, from heavy driving grooves to delicately arranged folk songs. Marty leaves the stage out of breath and sweaty, his audience in awe. It’s hard to describe, impossible to categorize. Yet people who know the music will try to explain it to you, just as you might struggle to explain a dream in the morning. The details might slip away as you recount them, but the feeling remains.

“I started playing music as medicine for myself to feel good and digest some melancholy,” Marty leaves off. “Over time, I realized if music makes me feel good, the people around me who become a part of it will feel good too. It connects us on the same wavelength. I hope to give the world something real and refreshing.
