Free Ranger-Guided Snowshoe Walks at Crater Lake
Dec
17
to Apr 30

Free Ranger-Guided Snowshoe Walks at Crater Lake

In an average winter, Crater Lake National Park receives 42 feet of snow! Ranger-guided snowshoe walks are a fun way to explore this winter wonderland while learning how plants, animals, and people survive the harsh conditions.

Walks are offered on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from late November through April. They also take place on weekdays during Winter Break (December 23-January 3) and Spring Break (March 24-28).

They start at 1:00 pm, last two hours, and cover 1 to 2 miles of moderate-to-strenuous terrain. They don’t follow a trail—the hike is an off-trail exploration through the forests and meadows along the rim of Crater Lake. On days when the road to Rim Village is closed, they explore the forests and meadows near Park Headquarters.

There is no cost for the tour, apart from the park’s winter entrance fee of $20 per vehicle. Snowshoes are provided free of charge and no previous snowshoeing experience is necessary. Participants must be at least 8 years old and come prepared with warm clothing and water-resistant footwear. Pets are not allowed.

Space on each tour is limited and advance reservations are required. For more information and to sign up, call 541-594-3100. Outdoor clubs, scout troops, and other organized groups of 10 or more people may be able to arrange for a separate tour, staff permitting.

2025 Mt. Ashland Skimo Summit
Feb
1
8:30 AM08:30

2025 Mt. Ashland Skimo Summit

A true backcountry event in the heart of the Siskiyou Mountains in Southern Oregon. The race starts and ends at the Mt Ashland Ski Area, but you'll be venturing in and around the ski area.

Whether you are a hard core skimo athlete or a recreational backcountry skiing enthusiast there is a place for you at the Mt A Skimo Summit! We offer two race courses which are detailed below.

All participants will also be eligible to ski and ride for a discount on the lifts at the ski area after their race thanks to the generous support of the Mt Ashland Ski Area.

We will have day of registration for 140$/70$ for Full/Rec courses, but we highly encourage everyone to sign up earlier, which helps us get our meal & beer orders, and print out the results sheet

NOTE: Anyone under 21 is eligible for a 40% off discount. Use code Youth23 at checkout. Anyone under 14 is free use code Youth14 at checkout (for Rec Course only).

Full Course Description

The full course at the Mt Ashland Skimo Summit is a true backcountry event! We start and end on the manicured Mt Ashland Ski Area trails, but the bulk of the time you’ll be skiing and riding in untamed ungroomed terrain outside of the ski area.

While the Mt Ashland Skimo Summit full course is a race and does follow race formatting you need not consider yourself a racer to take part. This course will cover advanced skiing terrain and therefore requires both strong downhill skiing ability and endurance.

There are four major climbs and a fifth very short climb at the finish. The total vertical gain and loss is approximately 4,500ft. The distance is approximately 8 miles.

The course will be fully marked to USSMA standards with green flagging on the ascents, red flagging on the descents, yellow flagging for the bootjack, and blue marking for transitions.

Required Gear: Helmet, Avalanche Safety Gear (beacon, shovel probe), skins, backpack which you can strap your skis/board to, food, water, extra layers.

There will be four categories for the full course (with M/F winners):
Skimo: no maximum weight gear weight limit
Heavy Metal Skier: Ski+binding weight over 1,500 grams
Splitboard

Recreational Course Description

Overview:
Our recreational course at the Mt Ashland Skimo Summit is perfect for newer uphill skiers or people looking for a shorter effort. The course will incorporate one major climb from the Mt Ashland Lodge to the Summit followed by a descent on piste, finishing with a short 250ft climb back to the Lodge to finish. All of our rec course will remain in the ski area boundary and racers will not be required to carry avalanche safety equipment. The course will descend a blue ski run and does not require expert downhill skiing ability.

The Total vertical gain and loss on the rec course is approximately 1,100ft and the distance is approximately 2.2 miles.

We'll have 2 categories, Male and Female for the rec course.

Required Gear

FULL COURSE:
Our full course travels outside of the ski area boundary into the backcountry on the Siskiyou Crest. Avalanche safety gear is required (Beacon, Shovel, Probe), skins (no snowshoes for the full course), along with a backpack that you can strap your ski or snowboard to for the boot pack section (no carrying your skis on this section for safety reasons). Recommended gear: Helmet, food and water, extra layers

REC COURSE:
Our rec course will stay inside the normal ski area boundary and so avalanche safety gear is not required. The following items are recommended: Helmet, Food/Water, Extra layers

Schedule

See https://www.mtashlandskimo.com/race-schedule for more details

Race Date: Saturday Feb 4th 2023
Race Start 7:30am
Awards: 1:30 pm

Cancellation/Refund Policy

In highly unlikely case that we'll have to cancel, the Mt Ashland Skimo Summit cannot offer refunds on race entry fees. Most of the money goes towards insurance, which will not be refunded. We'll do our best in adapting our course rather than cancelling the event.

We aren't making any money on putting on this event, we do it because we love the sport and love to see the community come together. We ask for your understanding.

Free Entry into National Parks in Honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
Jan
20
12:01 PM12:01

Free Entry into National Parks in Honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

The 2025 free entrance days are:

  • January 20 – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

  • April 19 – First Day of National Park Week

  • June 19 – Juneteenth National Independence Day

  • August 4 – Great American Outdoors Act Signing Day

  • September 27 – National Public Lands Day

  • November 11 – Veterans Day

    Where:
With over 400 national parks, monuments, and historic sites, there’s something for everyone. Visit NPS.gov/findapark to explore the park options nearest you. If you’re visiting a park that normally charges an entrance fee, review your entrance pass options before you arrive.

    1. When:
The National Park Service is waiving the entrance fee for parks on six days in 2025, so consider planning your visit then. Otherwise, pick a date that works for you to visit and keeping in mind seasonal changes, how much daylight you’ll need, and if you need to get to the park early in the day to get parking or take advantage of lower temperatures.

    1. How:
Some national parks require advanced reservations for camping, lodging, or timed entry. Research and book early to secure your spot, especially for popular parks.

    1. Pick the right activity for you:
Review the possible activities, including ranger-led programs, scenic hikes, tours, and more. Planning allows you to maximize your experience while balancing active days with relaxation. Consider your experience and skill level when picking your activity.

    1. Prepare for the unexpected:
Sometimes, our travel plans might change last minute or even during the hike. Do your research to know what else the park has to offer if you don’t end up being able to do what you planned that day. For example, if there’s more rain than you prepared for, visit the park museum or take a scenic drive. Make sure you check the park website or the NPS App for updated conditions, seasonal closures, and alerts.

    1. Bring the right gear:
Plan like a Park Ranger and pack essentials like water, appropriate clothing, and maps. You can download park maps for offline use from the NPS App so you can find your way even if there’s no Wi-Fi. Note that water might be hard to come by in some parks, so make sure you bring your own, especially if you’ll be outside for a while.

Group Skating Lessons - Ice Skating Lessons for Beginners Ages 5-10 years old will be available in January 2023.  Registration will open on January 9th @ 9 AM. In order to provide access to lessons for as many students as possible we ask that registration for each skater is limited to only a Monday or Wednesday Session.

Private Skating Lessons - Pre-registration is required. Please call 541.552.2258 after to schedule private instruction for all ages and skill levels.

Free Open/Hockey Skate - The rink will be open for skaters to enjoy the rink at no charge.  Staff is not on site and skate rentals are not available. The rink may close intermittently based on weather conditions and maintenance needs.

School Field Trip Programs - We are unable to provide School Field Trip Programs for the 2022-2023 Ice Skating Season due to staffing shortages. We look forward to bringing this back next season!

Team Youth Hockey - We are unable to provide youth hockey programs for the 2022-2023 Ice Skating Season due to staffing shortages.  We look forward to bringing this back next season!
