PARKOUR SUMMER CAMPS AT HIGS GYM
If you want to sign your kids up for an unforgettable summer camp, Parkour Camp at HIGS Gym is the place you want them to be! I can't tell you how amazing it is to see all of the kids transform from one day to the next in confidence and bravery.
First, you may be asking, what is parkour? HIGS Gym describes it as, "The art of movement. It can be summarized as moving through your environment with quickness and efficiency while negotiating any obstacle that may be in your way by jumping, climbing and vaulting." If you have ever watched the 'Ninja Warrior' competitions on TV, that is basically what the kids are doing.
The first day the kids are all broken up into teams by age group, and then the girls get their own team. They are all given colored HIGS Gym bandanas and then they start the day in various stations. Each challenge tests the kid’s abilities, but is easy enough for any kid to conquer.
Ilias' had such a blast climbing up walls, crab walking over rope bridges, balancing on beams, swinging across ropes, ziplining, and more. It's a day full of testing agility and challenging their teammates. Later in the day, the whole camp gets together to compete against each other which ends up being a three day competition for ice cream and bragging rights. I loved hearing Ilias' cries of joy cheering his teammates on and watching him master the challenges (or not) with a huge smile on his face. I was impressed constantly with his showing of strength and balance, and the confidence he showed each time he tried anything. He was having so much fun, I don't think that he realized he was learning new ways to use his strength and push his body further than he ever had before. All of the kids truly gain a sense of being part of something awesome and fun, and feel like they have accomplished something.
Of course, I was really impressed with the girls drive. They were right up there with the boys competing right alongside them. In fact, on the last day they were winning the weeks team competition up until the last event! Olivia was so excited to cheer on the girls. I'm so happy that she has such strong girls to look up to and aspire to be like!
At the end of the day it was free play, so the kids would get to play on whichever course that they chose, and then Tuesday and Wednesday ended with Battle Beam; a Jiu Jitsu style challenge to see who gets knocked off a beam balanced over a pool. Everyone loved it, the whole camp would gather to cheer on their mates, chanting for them and laughing together at whoever ended up in the pool.
The last day of Parkour Camp is water obstacle day. Water soaker fights, obstacle courses with pools added in the mix, and of course battle beam. It's like the TV show Wipeout hopped up on ice cream and kids hormones. The coaches also battle each other, which is especially fun to watch their expertise and technique. The whole day is so much fun to watch as a parent, I can only imagine how much fun it is to participate as a kid. Ilias was already asking to sign-up for the next session before he was done with the last one.
Unfortunately Parkour Camps are only offered during the summer, but HIGS Gym offers youth and teen parkour classes, along with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, girls boxing, and adult’s classes throughout the year.
